Chapter 24 Mike

While most people were waiting out the storm in a safe place, emergency responders were called to The Brick to address a fire that ended up leaving part of the building in ruins. As far as anyone could tell, most people, including the inmates were accounted for. All except for one young boy.

Parker Penn had a slender build and at age fourteen was still under five feet tall. His small stature made him a target by the other boys, especially Jefferson, and with a name like Parker Penn, well needless to say, the guys called him PP. He was at The Brick for shoplifting. He only ever stole food and that was to feed himself and his siblings. His mom was too busy working a third shift job that barely paid the rent. She turned a blind eye to the thievery her oldest son was engaged in since it put food on the table. Parker worried about his family. How were they going to eat if he didn’t get the food? He wanted nothing more than to escape The Brick. He saw the storm as his window of opportunity.

When everyone was being led back to their rooms, Parker took advantage of the preoccupied guards and slipped away to hide in the restrooms located near the gym. He would pay for that decision with his life.

The fire in the supply closet was raging and had spread to the hallway. The varnish on the floor was highly flammable and there was no getting past it. The angry fingers of the flames reached into the bathroom where Parker was hiding waiting for his chance to exit the building. Like a lover extending her arms to embrace another, the fire reached for Parker. He was trying to keep away by backing into a stall, but the flames simply went under the door. Before long the smoke got to Parker and he fell on the floor and curled up in a ball hoping, waiting, and praying for someone to come rescue him.

Someone did finally find him, but it was long after the flames were put out. He was still in the fetal position, fire does that to a body. He was identified through a process of elimination. Everyone was accounted for except Parker Penn.

Mike and Joe were just leaving the morgue when they got the call to head to The Brick. Mike had an initial moment pf panic when he heard the words fire and The Brick in the same sentence. He was quickly reassured Libby was fine.

“What was the poor kid doing by himself in the bathroom?” asked Joe.

“I’m sure if we knew the answer to that we could just phone in our findings,” said Mike.

“Jerk. You know what I mean.”

“My suspicions would be he was hiding. This is a juvenile detention center, so the kids are not always going to do as they’re told.”

“Wonder what started the fire?” asked Joe.

“Guess our first interview needs to be the fire chief.”

The storm had left behind a mess of downed trees and debris.
